As sad as we are to say goodbye to the hottest UK summer since the seventies, there’s no denying that Autumn has certainly arrived. With any new season, there comes an abundance of brand new fashion trends that need to be tried and tested, and we can’t wait to explore the hottest new looks of the season.
If you’re brave, and have ventured into any high street store recently, you’ll know that it’s like taking a step back in time. The previous decades seem to have had a massive influence on the biggest trends of this season, and we are totally down for it. We’ve got nineties plaid, the eighties party dress, and the seventies brown all to play with! We love the eccentricity of these bold throwback trends, but they can be fairly intimidating and hard to style in the present day. To help you out, we’ve have put together a look-book, showing you how we would choose to style some of these looks for Autumn/Winter. So if you didn’t know how to pull off a chequered two-piece, colourful corduroy jeans, or a brown dress…you will now!
Wild for Animal Print
Let’s kick things off with something a little more familiar. Animal print has prowled the spring/summer catwalks already this year, and it looks like it’s here to stay through the colder months too. Whether you’re into the classic look of leopard print, or after something new and slightly different like snake-skin, there is plenty to choose from on the high street. For this particular look, we’ve opted for leopard print with this cute roll neck top from Warehouse. The purple leopard print offers a unique twist on this design classic, and it’s also the perfect colour for this time of year. Autumn is all about layering, so we would style the top under a simple black cami dress like this one from ASOS.
To round off this sophisticated autumnal look, throw on a pair of woolly tights and these gorgeous PIKOLINOS leather ankle boots. At £92, the boots are of a more premium price point, but you certainly get what you pay for in terms of quality. The leather is super soft, and the shoes feature a gel foam padded mid-sole for extra comfort. You really can’t go wrong with a black ankle boot in Autumn and we are sure they’ll get lots of wear, so this makes them totally worth the splurge if you ask us.

If you’re a 90s baby like us, you’ll be happy to know that plaid is making a very strong comeback this season. From Prada and Marc Jacobs, to Calvin Klein and Chanel, checks were a strong favourite amongst all high-end designers on their Autumn/Winter catwalks. Luckily for us, the high-street brands take inspiration from these iconic runways, creating very similar designs (thankfully) at a fraction of the price.
When browsing Topshop’s ‘new in’ section on their website, we spotted this amazing chequered two-piece set and instantly fell in love. As soon as we saw it, we remembered Cher from the classic 90s film Clueless, and her iconic yellow plaid suit that she totally rocked. Who’d have thought that clueless inspired looks would be in fashion in 2018?!
This chequered suit is a true statement piece, so we recommend keeping things simple elsewhere in the outfit. A white roll-neck top like this from TU at Sainsbury’s would be ideal, and it would also keep you warm too. When it comes to shoes, Cher teamed her statement look with knee-high socks and white stiletto heels, but if you’re after something more appropriate for everyday wear, we suggest a pair of loafers like these IKON oxblood loafers. Their maroon colour compliments the colours running through the suit’s chequered design perfectly, pulling the whole outfit together.
Brown is the New Black
This season, it looks like brown is the new black. Forget blacks, greys and navys, because it’s all about rusty oranges, and deep chestnut browns for the upcoming months. Brown is a colour that dominated the seventies fashion scene, and like various other trends from the decade, it’s back, and it’s bigger than ever.
The best thing about this trend is that you can find something that works for you. Brown (and its many different shades), is a staple colour across the high street currently, meaning that you’ll be able to find both clothes and accessories in this colour. From trousers, jeans and skirts, to jumpers, coats and bags, the choice is yours.
If you’re open to try out something new and different, take a look at this stylish rusty brown gingham dress from MONKI at ASOS. Now you’re probably thinking…a dress… for autumn/winter? But this versatile piece is perfect for layering. Throw on a cropped black jumper, a leather jacket and these stunning Barbour biker boots to create a look that is cool and edgy, but more importantly, will keep you warm. You could also dress the outfit up with a black belt to cinch you in at the waist, black heels, and statement earrings, which would look amazing for a night out. The options really are endless with this dress, and that’s why we love it. Plus, at £35, it is an absolute bargain considering all the different looks you can achieve from it!
Oh My Cord
Another seventies trend that has made its way back to the forefront of the 2018 fashion scene is corduroy. Again, like the brown trend, corduroy is a material being used for various items of clothing, so you can choose the best product for you.
Jeans are arguably the easiest item of clothing to style, and it goes without saying that there are plenty of cord jeans on the high street to choose from. However, the pair that caught our eye are these super cute pink slim fit corduroy trousers from MONKI. They are available in six different shades, but we think every autumn/winter wardrobe should have a bit of pink in it.
For a casual, yet stylish look, team with a stripy top like this one from & other stories. We like this t-shirt in particular because it features pink piping details along collar that matches the trousers perfectly. In terms of footwear, we would recommend keeping it casual with a pair of white ROCKET DOG platform trainers. Not only is the hidden platform ultra cool and stylish, but it also provides you with extra height, without the discomfort. Even better, they are currently on offer for £39, which is a great price for a pair of shoes as fashionable, versatile, and comfortable as these.
